Synopsis
Sam goes to sleep, uncertain if he remembered to lock the front door. In the middle of the night, he wakes to find the door standing wide open. Heart racing, he searches the house for intruders, only to be caught in the end. But just as he gets caught, he wakes up. It was only a nightmare.
Shaken by the nightmare, Sam storms downstairs to check the door. It’s locked. Looking through the peephole, he sees nothing. Relieved, he returns to his room and lies on the bed.
When Sam is about to sleep, he notices the window. It’s open; it shouldn't be.
Someone is inside...

Our key influences for At Night Lock Your Doors include classic 80s horror films such as Halloween (1978) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
My main role included editing, colour grading, and adding effects to the film. I focused on how different colour grading schemes evoke a sense of warmth (orange colour palette) vs tension (blue colour palette).
I improved the 80s horror aspect through halation, channel blurs, VR digital glitch, and noise. The majority of these effects influence the colour image, such as adding a reddish glow around objects.
For the dream sequence, I increased the red and blue channel blurs for a purple glow, symbolizing the supernatural and deviant. These effects support the 80s horror aesthetic by simulating colour fringing and halation characteristics of vintage film stocks and analogue VHS tapes.
It removes the crisp, modern footage and aims for a raw, nostalgic, and eerie ambiance. The dream scene's glows and decreasing edge clarity also aid in blurring the line between reality and fiction.
